Providing ecological consultancy services in South Wales
Koru Ecology Associates Limited is led by ecologist Diana Clark, who has over twenty years experience in the sector, both in the UK and overseas.
Diana has previously worked for large, multi-disciplinary consultancies, as well as small and focused specialist practices, delivering ecological input for a wide range of projects across England, Wales and Scotland. At Koru Ecology Associates, her work is supported by a small team of assistants, hand-picked for their high level of skill and experience. Based in Swansea, Koru Ecology Associates provides ecological services across southern Wales, as well as occasionally further afield. |
in the beginning
Preliminary Ecological Appraisal
A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) is usually the first thing asked for by local authorities when a planning application is submitted, and is used to identify (or rule out) ecological issues right from the start.
For smaller schemes this may only relate to a specific species group, such as bats, for example if your planning application relates to a single dwelling or small group of buildings. Koru Ecology Associates can conduct Preliminary Ecological Appraisals at any time of year, however we recommend that you commission this type of survey as early as possible in your project. This will allow rapid identification of additional surveys required, thus reducing the likelihood of seasonal times constraints and undesirable delays to your scheme. |
NEXT
Protected species survey
The Preliminary Ecological Appraisal completed at your site may identify the potential for protected and/or other notable species to be present. Further species-specific surveys may be recommended, based on the type of habitats present, and the location of your site within the wider landscape.
Protected species surveys are often season-specific, and must be completed at optimum times of the year to ensure quality data is collected and your planning application is as robust as possible. Koru Ecology Associates can conduct a range of species-specific surveys, in particular for bats, badgers, dormice, water voles, otters, reptiles and amphibians. |
solutionsDesign, mitigation and licensing
The best way to ensure ecology is addressed appropriately in any planning application, is to avoid impacts on ecological features in the first place. This can often be achieved through careful design, as well as by implementing a strong landscaping scheme and management plan that compliments existing habitats.
In some instances this might not be possible, and therefore mitigation may be required in order to minimise impacts - which in turn may require a licence from a regulator, such as Natural Resources Wales. Koru Ecology Associates aims to work closely with each client to recommend design features, mitigation measures and licensing procedures that result in the best deal for both wildlife and the scheme - whilst ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and planning policy. |
